My research focuses upon the physiology of fish, especially systems that regulate respiratory gas exchange, salt, water and acid-base balance, digestion, excretion, growth, welfare and health. I explore the integration of these physiological systems with behaviour, and how collectively these allow appropriate responses to various stimuli to enhance fitness and performance. Three major applied research themes that are underpinned by my fundamental physiological research are: 1) the physiological, behavioural and population effects of environmental change (particularly CO 2 -induced acidification, warming, hypoxia, and contaminants), 2) using physiology to improve the sustainability of aquaculture (especially relating to water chemistry and feed modification), and 3) the role of fish in global ocean chemistry and biogeochemical cycles.
